Even avid boaters can sometimes forget or confuse the rules surrounding drinking and boating. Boating safely in Québec is simple once you know the rules and regulations and it’s important to understand the potential consequences you face for breaking them. While carrying and transporting open alcohol in a boat is legal in Québec, it is NOT legal to be boating under the influence. So, while out exploring the beautiful 1,000 islands along the Saint Lawrence River or casting your lines at Lake Saint François, it’s always best to keep your beer on the pier!
In Québec there is no difference between drink-driving and drink-boating and the current penalties reflect that. Captains are allowed to be behind the wheel of their boat if they have consumed alcohol, so long as their Blood Alcohol Level (BAC) is no higher than 0.08%. But it is important to remember that while boating you are outside and variables such as the sun and wind can quickly enhance the effects of alcohol on your system.
If caught boating under the influence, first time offenders can face a minimum fine of $1,000 plus jail time, and second time offenders are handed the same fine with jail time no less than 14 days. It’s going to be difficult to enjoy boating from a cell with a $1,000 hole burned in your pocket…
Boating is an activity that many people enjoy with their friends and loved ones, and their lives should never be put at risk. When heading out on the water, make sure you know the rules and more importantly make sure that you are following them. Once you and your passengers have made it back to the dock safely, you can put down your anchor and feel free to indulge! For more information, contact Québec’s SQ.
